    "9-23-61
    Dear Ted:
    That was a remarkable letter you sent me on Sept. 16th.  Seldom have I received so penetrating an appreciation of what I've been trying to do.  It is a great encouragement; & now, as I begin to write Vol. IX, I shall bear in mind that it must not let you down.  Bless you.
