Autograph Letter SignedAuthor:
DEVINE, Amelia Kunkle (1884-1984)
Title:
Autograph Letter Signed
Description:
This Salvation Army cadet in New York spent ten cents on a bell to complement the suspended red pot the fundraisers had been using since 1891 -- and thus began the still-standing tradition of the bell-ringers.
ALS, 2pp (both sides), light green heavy stock 3½" X 6¼" card, n.p., 20 December 1976. Addressed to Paul Johnston of Valparaiso, Indiana (whose name/address inkstamp appears on verso). Near fine. Interesting content, reading in part: "I was an officer for 14 yrs, until my marriage to a wonderful Christian man from Scotland, & have been on touch with the Army all these yrs. I had a Uncle who lived in Elkhart So if you find any Kunkle's around Ind. they might be one of our tribe. Do you belong to the S.A.?" Boldly penned and signed in blue ballpoint. Comes with a small news clipping featuring a photo of Devine at age 92 ringing a bell and also a letter from the San Francisco Salvation Army office providing this Devine admirer with her Burlingame, California address. Most unusual.
