WODEHOUSE, P.G. & ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER & TIM RICE. Original Typed Letter Signed by P.G. Wodehouse Regarding the Production of a Musical Play with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice Based on His Character Jeeves. New York: Single sheet, 6 1/4” x 7”, 1973. Original Typed Letter Signed by P.G. Wodehouse regarding production of a musical play with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, based on his character Jeeves, the valet, written on his personal printed stationery dated December 27, 1973. About fine with two punch holes at the left margin and a faint hint of offsetting. The letter reads in full: “Dear Mr Hambridge, Rice and Webber started to do a musical about Jeeves, but after about a year Rice backed out, said the subject beat him! I was pleased, as I never thought the venture could prosper. Webber plans to get somebody other than Rice to do the book and lyrics, but I bet nothing comes of it! Yours, P.G. Wodehouse”. The musical did, in fact, get created, titled ‘By Jeeves’ with music by Andrew Lloyd Weber and lyrics by Alan Ayckbourn with a premiere on April 22, 1975 at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London, sadly running for only one month. After rewrites, the show was produced in 1996 in both London and America, and premiered on Broadway on October 28 2001, running until December 30, 2001.
